How To Reach Vienna

Vienna, being the capital of Austria, is very well connected internationally. From India, most flights stop in the Middle East before heading to Europe, making Vienna easily accessible for Indian travelers. Vienna International Airport is well-established and beautifully designed, serving as a major gateway to Central Europe.

Vienna Airport is located about 18km from the city center. I found several ways to reach Vienna city center without spending a fortune. The best options to reach the city center are the S7 train, CAT express train, and airport buses. However, the most efficient and budget-friendly option is the S7 train, which costs practically nothing (€4.30) and drops you directly in the central part of the city.

Schengen Visa

I have covered how to get Schengen visa in my previous post. One can refer Schengen Visa for Indians. The only difference would be the fee. Now the fee has increased from the previous times. I paid around 7500 INR for visa fee & another 1800 Rs for courier service.

Best Things To Do In Vienna

Vienna, though compact, brims with charm, and most of its iconic attractions cluster around the majestic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. This central area is perfect for exploring on foot, easily covered in half a day if you’re admiring from the outside. Nearby, you’ll find Rathausplatz, Heldenplatz, and Maria-Theresien-Platz—each a stunning showcase of Vienna’s architectural grandeur. These landmarks, with their intricate details and historic allure, are a must-see for any traveler strolling through the city.

For me, the true gem of Vienna is Donauinsel. This riverside haven offers breathtaking views of the city skyline, framed by the serene Danube River and lush green landscapes. It’s a mind-blowing escape that blends urban beauty with nature’s tranquility—a perfect spot to soak in Vienna’s magic.

How To Do Vienna In Budget?

Europe has become expensive lately, and it is getting pricier with each passing day. However, these are the bare minimum expenses I believe one must expect to incur for various activities

Accommodation: During summer the place is very expensive. The best place to find hostel are following booking.com & hostelworld.com. During my trip I stayed at Wombat's City Hostel It was decent hostel & costed me upwards of Rs 2000 per night. The vibe was good, there was a coffee shop & a bar on the ground floor. Being a youth hostel, chances of finding good people is easy here. But expect to spend more around 20 Euro per night for any good hostel.

Food: Asia supermarkets are a convenient option for affordable meals. They offer a variety of options, including cheap noodles with asian taste & most of the asian food can be found here. Drinks are at par now days; 1.5 euro for a can of beer. Further, Eating out is expensive & is upwards of 10 Euros for basic meals.

Transportation: The most convenient way to travel is via metro, get a three day ticket for approx 27 Euros & travel freely across the place. This can be bought on major metro stations.

Activities: I only wandered around the place & haven't spent on entry tickets. I am not fond of museums of churches. I like outdoor more so I enjoyed the place where i sat near the river & enjoyed some music.

Is it Safe To Travel To Vienna Solo?

Vienna felt safe most of the time. However, like any major city, you need to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. At night there can be some situations that might upset people, particularly those who aren't used to urban nightlife. The rowdiness in public places is visible at times and during certain hours. For me, it came as a little shock seeing some people behaving that way, as I wasn't expecting it in such a refined city.

Though overall I didn't have any bad experience, so I liked the whole experience. Yet, it is advisable to take care of your surroundings and be mindful of the time at which you're traveling, just like you would in any major European capital.

Vienna safety tips from my experience:

*) Daytime: Extremely safe, no concerns at all
*) Evening/Night: Generally safe but stay alert, especially around nightlife areas.
*) Public transport: Safe and reliable, even late at night.
*) Tourist areas: Very secure with good police presence
The city has excellent infrastructure and most locals are helpful. Just use common sense like you would in any big city - don't flash expensive items, stay aware of your surroundings, and trust your instincts.

My Experience of Traveling To Vienna Solo

I had a bad start to the trip considering my flight and visa hassles. However, once I boarded my flight from Dubai, things were fine and great. After traveling for some time, I finally landed at Vienna Airport. The airport process was hassle-free with smooth entry and visa procedures. Though there's hardly anyone to help once you cross immigration.

Vienna Airport is approximately 18km from the city center, and to reach the city, I took the S7 train (a metro as we call it in India). I asked locals for help, and once I reached the connecting station, it was getting a bit sketchy as I didn't have any mobile data. Yeah! I travel mostly using WiFi just to test my survival instincts.

After reaching Landstraße, I took another metro to Wombat's hostel, which was located near the metro station at walkable distance. The hostel was nice and quiet; it had a coffee shop and a bar with a pool table. I reached Vienna on Saturday, and it seems Austrians really love their weekends - most shops were closed along with clubs and pubs. The crowd wasn't much, and it seemed people prefer to enjoy themselves at home on weekends. To be frank, I was a bit disappointed with the weekend vibes.

Also, Vienna isn't big on unique attractions. In that way, most European cities have similar characteristics - architectural buildings with similar taste and design, churches, and ancient European buildings. I chose Vienna as my starting point because I wanted to visit Salzburg, which is a paradise for nature lovers. I stayed in Vienna for only 3 days and traveled across the city, enjoying the views and atmosphere.

The good thing about Vienna for me was the lush green riverfront, which is serene in itself. Having the place all to yourself for walking and running adjacent to the river gives you a one-of-a-kind feeling. The city is super developed and has a decent vibe. If you ask me whether I'd want to travel there again, I would say maybe not. It didn't give me any lasting experience. But during summers, the riverside can be a great experience.

One afternoon in Vienna stands out vividly in my memory. With nothing to do before catching an evening train, I wandered into the city center. While exploring on foot, I stumbled across a beautiful garden and decided to sit there for a while. It was a sunny day, a rare treat in European countries, making it a big deal for locals. Families, kids, and couples were all relaxing under the sun. Office workers brought their lunch and were enjoying it. The carefree vibe, with no rush to work and people simply basking in the sunshine, made me wonder: where are we running? Watching people practice yoga in nature and relax with their families was a sight to enjoy. Life in well-developed countries shines through in their love for living. I envy them for this—the refreshing and mesmerizing connection to nature.
