Amsterdam Central
Amsterdam is the capital of The Netherlands. This young city is charming in every possible way. This is my first time in Europe This post will be all about the city. I will try to capture the city from a tourist point of view so that one can plan their tour in a better way. I did a solo trip & planned everything by myself. I stayed here for 5 days & explored everything possible.

The city is for young lads, it is one of the crowdest places in the Europe. The vibe is just amazing, any one looking for some good time should visit this place. One of the reasons for attraction is its leniency in policies. The best example of which is coffee shops (not a usual coffee 😛 for sure).

Amsterdam is also famous for its night life, open culture, canals & beautiful sunsets. There is so much to see here that any number of days can not do justice to beauty of this place. Every corner is unique & beautiful. If bored of Amsterdam (which will never be the case) you can head towards its near by places which are as attractive as Amsterdam.

How To Reach:

Flight:

Amsterdam international airport is located some 9 Km from the Amsterdam central. Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam international airport) is one of the busiest airports in the Europe (Why wouldn't it be). There are direct flights from any part of the world. I reached Schiphol by train from Brussels Airport, the direct train took 1.5 hrs to reach Schiphol. The Airport is like a mini fan fare with several outlets & several shops.

Trains: There are several trains connecting various parts of EU to Amsterdam airport or Amsterdam central. The time table of trains can be checked from sites like Euro rail or at the station only. The frequency of trains are appropriate. There is no such rush thus it is easy to find train tickets on the spot. Some of the sites for railway ticket bookings are GoEuro, raileurope, trainlines.eu etc.

Buses: Buses are another major mode of transportation, buses can be booked through flexibus etc. Time taken by bus is more compared to the trains. However, if one is interested in experiencing some of the landscapes it is recommended to travel by bus. I used flexibus for making a booking. I traveled from Amsterdam to Paris & from Paris to Barcelona in Bus.

Things To Do In Amsterdam:

Amsterdam is among the most vibrant & lively cities in Europe. The young crowd get attracted to this beautiful place because of its beauty & care free attitude. Amsterdam is good enough for 4 to 5 days if traveling & want to cover major attractions. I stayed for 5 days in Amsterdam & loved the place. Ther are so many activities which can be done, however when traveling it is recommended to select activities wisely as time is involved. Below is the list of major activities CHOOSE WISELY. 😀
Museums: Main attraction of Amsterdam is its museums. There are plenty of them available. Take a time out & visit some of these. Some of the best are History museums, Van Gogh & Rijskmuseum. I personally enjoyed Van Gogh museum. His famous painting of sunflower is crowd attraction. It is worth a visit. There are admission charges in all the famous museums. Minimum price is 7 Euros.

Canal Trip: The city is located admist of canals & no other way to roam around the city then canal tour. This roughly one hour tour touches all the major points in the city. Canal trip is a nice way to look around the city. The cost of trip starts from 16 Euros.

Cycle Tour: One of the famous modes of transportation in the city is cycle. Rent a cycle & roam around the roads. Right hand drive may create a problem. However, other than that there is no other major issue. It is easy to rent a cycle. The charges start from 10 Euros per day. Cycling is best in narrow streets, also there is so much to see that one can ride for hours without getting tired.

Heineken Experience: This is a must visit for beer lovers, the factory provides the insight to its manufacturing. The factory provides over view of the Heineken. Admission charges of 18 Euros is applicable. If you are really interested in the process then only visit this place. Else you can skip this.

Parks: Tired of all the hustle bustle of the city. Head toward parks. Vondelpark & oosterpark are two such parks. Unwind yourself at these locations. The lush green fields & a sunny day is perfect to visit these places. It is easy to find people partying, playing, practicing, smoking etc at these parks.

Jordan: A neighborhood of the Amsterdam, this is a delight. The place is known for cafes & restaurants & its food. Roam on foot & enjoy the architect. Good for a half day tour.

Zoo: Traveling with kids, zoo is the best place to be in. It is easy to spot animals & birds at this zoo. There are many animals in the zoo & it is good outing with kids. Whole tour will hardly take any time. Entry charges are applicable which usually starts from 21 Euros.
Rotterdam: If looking for something new, travel to Rotterdam it is approx. 1 hour from Amsterdam & can be reached by train. The cost of one way ticket is 17 Euros. It's architect is fabulous & amazing. Cubicle houses & sea museum is a prime attraction here.

Red Light Area: The dark side of Amsterdam is worth a visit. Thousands of travelers visit this area for its broad offerings. The area is crowded most of the nights.

Anne Frank House: The house has become favorite tourist destination, there are long queues for the entry. It is advisable to book tickets prior the visit. The long queues may dishearten you. The house has some history attached to it. Admission charges are 9 Euros.

Cost Involved:

Major cost on a trip is due to accommodation, commutation, food & site seeing. Whole of the Europe is expensive for travelers. Even the youth hostels are costly compared to south eastern countries. Expect to pay hefty sums during the trip.

Accommodation:

There are plenty of youth hostels available. The cost varies largely depending upon the location of the hostels. Generally, prices start from 25 - 30 Euros per night for a bed in a dorm. For hostels at some distance from city central the prices start from 15-20 Euros per night for a bed.Stayokay hostels are famous chain in Amsterdam.

Check the hostels here.

Food:

I personally didn't liked the food. The cold & less spicy food can be bit hard on the tongue. Vegetarian will find it difficult to find good restaurants. Wok to walk is a heaven for taste buds comparing to rest of the outlets. Global chains like McDonalds & starbucks are easy to find. But, the cost is on higher side. The best way is to cook for yourself .Bakeries are other option to hop onto. Ready to pay atleast 2 Euros for a decent food. Fries are local delight do try Maoz fries. Can of beer starts from 0.50 Euros.

Commutation:

The best mode to commute is either through rented bike which will cost 10 Euros for a day or city cards (which allow free commutation). If not interested in either of two a cost of ticket starts from 2.90 Euros for an hour ticket. But, the best would be to buy city cards. It allows free & unlimited use of public transport. I did the same & it was very helpful.

Site Seeing:

Most of the major attractions in the city charge addmission fees. The minimum price needs to pay for such attractions is 7 Euros which can go upto 30 Euros. However, if the time is limited choose options wisely. It will help to save time & also the money.

I would suggest a daily budget of 50 - 55 Euros considering that stay would in youth hostel & you eat & drink wisely. Else, there is no upper limit to spend money here. 😀
Amsterdam is a young person city. The parties & the cross cultural environment make it perfect for any youngster. I saw hundreds of person enjoying their youth at this place. There is so much to see & so much to explore that 4 or 5 days doesn't seem to be much.
